OCTOBER 2020 (VOL.156)
Have you been to Japan?
My most recent trip in 2019, I went to Tohoku (Hachinohe, Oirase River, Towada City, Sendai) and Kyushu (Ukiha, Fukuoka, Kokura). I have been to Japan 5 times for both vacation and work. Each trip I have spent time in Tokyo and have also traveled to Kamakura, Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, Hakone, Osaka, and Nagoya. On my next trip, I want to go to Hokkaido.
Any unique stories about Japan?
When my cousin was living in Tokyo, he took me to a baseball game. It is hard to describe the energy in the stadium, listening to the fans sing and chant in unison and the mascots are hilarious. During my recent visit to Tohoku, I spent a few days at a resort by the Oirase River and was taken on a nature walk to learn about the landscape and how to identify varieties of bright green moss with a small magnifying glass. When I got back to Tokyo, I ate a glamorous teppanyaki dinner on the top floor of the Imperial Hotel and a delicious sushi meal in a restaurant under the train tracks in Nakameguro. I am amazed by how many fun and surprising things happen each time I am there.
Anything you are deeply in love with related to Japan?
I always visit many museums, architectural sites, and art galleries. The views from the tall buildings in Tokyo and Osaka are breathtaking. I have enjoyed the most serene walks along the river in Nakameguro, marveled at the beauty of the cherry blossoms by the Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto, and picked pears on a farm in Ukiha. I have navigated the famous Shibuya Crossing with hundreds of people and stood quietly on Hakkoda Mountain to take a view of the gorgeous fall leaves. Each experience makes me want to plan another trip to Japan.
